While teaching at Columbia College Chicago I created a contest that would bring
together art directors, copywriters, and film students into creating a finished TV spot. With the approval of three departments and assistance from the school’s Portfolio Center, I aptly named the contest: “Get Your Spot Shot.”
Basically this is how it worked:
(a) Students submitted scripts or storyboards to a panel of judges.
(b) The top three were then turned over to film students for shooting & editing.
(c) Each film student was given a budget of just $1,000 to work with.
My responsibility included supervising and mentoring each team throughout the project.
For over six years GYSS was a highly successful event garnering numerous awards for both the student and the school.
